Kick-off for the location of the smartest

Ceremony for the second construction phase of the EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf, opening of the first construction phase

The ceremony for the second construction phase of the EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf innovation location was celebrated on September 20, 2024, while the first technology and energy companies are starting to move into their premises in the adjacent first construction phase. In the three-part building ensemble at Düsseldorf Airport, companies, start-ups and science and research institutions with 4,000 employees will work closely together on energy, mobility and sustainability projects.

Guests on the day included the Deputy Prime Minister of NRW of North Rhine-Westphalia, all of Düsseldorf’s members of the Bundestag, the President of the Landtag, the Mayor, the City Director and numerous personalities from large and small companies and institutions from the new Düsseldorf EUREF community on the subject of the energy transition. The guest list also included the IHK Managing Director, the Head of the trade fair and – not unimportant in Düsseldorf – the President of the Carneval Committee.

FUTURE LOCATION AND TALENT CAMPUS

The starting signal was given by the state-owned NRW.Energy4Climate, which took over around 1,000 square meters of space on the fourth floor of the campus building on 1 July. The state company for energy and climate protection is an example of the leading energy players that will be based there, combining different competencies and industry backgrounds in energy and technology. From September, the French global corporation Schneider Electric will begin taking over 10,000 square meters of space, as will the multi-technology service provider SPIE with 8,000 square meters. Both are relocating their German headquarters to Düsseldorf with this move. Numerous other companies that have already signed rental agreements will follow successively. A special feature of the campus is the close cooperation between industry and universities: In cooperation with the University Alliance Ruhr and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and with the participation of the companies based on the EUREF-Campus, a range of study and further education courses is currently being developed, which includes five Master’s degree courses in the field of energy and mobility.

AIM OF THE EUREF-CAMPUS DÜSSELDORF

The EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf is a real-life laboratory for the energy and mobility transition in North Rhine-Westphalia. Innovations in the fields of energy, climate protection technology, environmental protection and mobility will be developed, researched and presented in showrooms by the companies and institutions based here. The opening of the new campus will intensify the companies’ existing working relationships. This green innovation campus is modeled on the existing EUREF-Campus Berlin, where some of the companies involved in Düsseldorf also have sites.

AN IMPORTANT PROJECT

Reinhard Müller, Founder and Board of EUREF AG: “Thanks to the commitment of our architects, the planners and the impressive cooperation of all the companies involved, an innovation hub for energy, sustainability and mobility is being created here. The list of start-ups, institutions and global corporations that have signed rental agreements is a who’s who of the smartest and best. We are excited about the collaborations and community activities that the campus will generate. We are convinced that our location can make a contribution to urban development and the region’s appeal.”

Mona Neubaur, Deputy Prime Minister of North RhineWestphalia: „New, groundbreaking ideas emerge where people come together, engage in interdisciplinary exchange and open discussion. The EUREF-Campus in Düsseldorf is such a place: a space of opportunity where innovative concepts for a sustainable future and the climate-neutral transformation of our industrial location, our energy system and our mobility are developed. I am certain that the EUREF-Campus will provide many powerful impulses – far beyond the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia.“

Dr. Stephan Keller, Mayor of Düsseldorf: “With the EUREF-Campus, a showcase project for energy a showcase project for the energy and mobility transition in Düsseldorf. We look forward to the partner companies soon developing activities and collaborations here. The concept also supports the city of Düsseldorf’s strategies for the energy transition and smart city. That is why the city’s economic development agency has supported and promoted the settlement process with full conviction right from the start.”

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS IN THREE PHASES

The first construction phase, which has now opened with 39,000 square meters of rental space, is fully let. A particular highlight is the inner courtyard around the EUREF dome, which is used as an event location, as it was in Berlin. The conference area on the second floor is also impressive. The shell of the second construction phase with 30,000 square meters of rental space has been completed and is due to be handed over to users in 2025. The third section, the Mobility Hub, is designed as a testing and start-up platform. The third construction phase with 18,500 square meters of space is planned for 2026.

SUCCESSFUL ROLE MODEL

The EUREF-Campus Düsseldorf was awarded the “Rheinland Genial” innovation prize by the Rhineland metropolitan region at the ground-breaking ceremony in 2021. However, it is modeled on the existing EUREF-Campus Berlin, which was designed and developed by the same developer and operator. The figures show just how convincing the concept has already been in Berlin: More than 150 companies, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises from business, science and research with 7,000 employees have set up shop at the EUREF-Campus Berlin. At the same time, the Berlin campus is a reference location for the state of Berlin’s Smart City strategy.

About EUREF AG

EUREF AG is a creative developer of energy and environmentally optimized properties with sustainable added value. It was founded by Reinhard Müller in connection with the acquisition of a 5.5-hectare site around the historic gasometer in Berlin-Schöneberg in 2007. In the years that followed, this site was developed into the EUREF-Campus Berlin, the leading location for the energy transition in Germany, which has been meeting the German government’s CO2 climate targets for 2045 since 2014. Since 2021, EUREF AG has been developing the second EUREF-Campus in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital of Düsseldorf.
