Companies, start-ups and research facilities are developing the “mobility of the future”. Approximately 2,500 jobs are to be created.

Düsseldorf is to be home to a new innovation campus with a research focus on the “mobility of the future”. Companies, start-ups and research facilities in the sector are to come together to form a new ecosystem where they develop innovative and economic dynamics. A green campus, with a focus towards the interior, a solar glass roof and the original Gasometer (gasholder) dome – famous from Günther Jauch’s talk show – is to be built, conveniently close to the airport and airport train station and adjacent to the planned lanes of the U81 and express bike lane.
In addition, a mobility hub is to be set up as a testing and founding platform for e-mobility, sharing models and autonomous driving.
This concept was developed by EUREF AG, which has been operating a campus of this kind in Berlin for 10 years that is considered to be a real-life laboratory of the shift to renewable energy. There are currently 3,500 employees collaborating there in more than 150 companies, start-ups and research facilities in the areas of energy, climate protection, ICT and mobility. Düsseldorf would be EUREF AG’s second site.

Mayor Thomas Geisel welcomes the plans:

“I am pleased that EUREF AG wants to come to Düsseldorf with a new campus. This further underscores our position as an innovative start-up city and makes an important contribution to the continued development of Düsseldorf as a business and technology site and of the entire region. The administration will intensively support the project in the establishment stage.“

Reinhard Müller, CEO of EUREF AG, is happy to have found a suitable property in Düsseldorf:

The State of North Rhine Westphalia also welcomes their locating here. Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy, says:

“I am glad to hear that there are now actual plans to implement this project in the State capital. EUREF-Campus is an excellent match for NRW: climate- and resource-saving business, new mobility concepts and autonomous driving, the digitalization of products and processes, energy storage and efficient, resource-saving control of buildings are issues which the State government also views as its obligations in terms of economic policy.“

As a result of the implementation of the project, with so-called anchor tenant Schneider Electric, currently based in Ratingen, the first step will mean 750 jobs in the region for the Germany headquarters. The international corporation is a global leader in digital transformation, especially in the areas of energy management and industrial automation, and is represented in around 150 countries with more than 140,000 employees.

With the Düsseldorf airport, an initial partner is provided in the immediate neighbourhood. Thomas Schnalke, Managing Director of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH::

After completion, according to current planning, there will be a total of around 2,500 jobs created at the Campus in established companies and start-ups.

Since the start of talks between EUREF AG and business development in February this year, the investor has devised and submitted an implementation plan within an extremely short period of time. This was made possible by means of the close collaboration of all of the project stakeholders.
The request for preliminary planning permission for the settlement project will be introduced in the next session cycle. Likewise, the project is to be presented in detail to the committee for economic development, tourism and housing. Meanwhile, negotiations are underway for acquiring the municipal property.
