The DUSconnect Project: At the intercharge of road, rail and air traffic, Düsseldorf is building the mobility of the future
Cannes/Düsseldorf, 11 March 2025
Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, together with Düsseldorf Airport and EUREF AG are planning a trimodal mobility hub in the north of the city – between the airport, the airport’s long-distance rail station and the EUREF-Campus. The DUSconnect Project will intelligently link the air, rail and road transport network with public transport and cycle paths over an area of around 70,000 m². At the same time, it will create space for optimally connected offices, hotels and parking areas.
This location has national significance and offers optimum conditions. With over 18.5 million people, Düsseldorf Airport has the largest catchment area in continental Europe and in 2024 alone, over 20 million passengers passed through it.
Düsseldorf is also the German airport with the most diverse connections. Every day more than 420 trains stop at Düsseldorf’s long-distance rail station even now. The expansion of the U81 local rail line and Rhein Ruhr Express (RRX) lines, will further strengthen the airport’s local transport services in the Rhine-Ruhr region, and the A44 and A52 motorways provide a direct link to long-distance road traffic.
Dr. Stephan Keller, Mayor of Düsseldorf, the state capital, will present the DUSconnect Project on March 12th at the international real estate trade fair MIPIM in Cannes, France: “DUSconnect is poised to establish a cutting-edge trimodal mobility hub in Düsseldorf, seamlessly integrating connectivity, comfort, and climate protection. In close collaboration with the airport and EUREF AG, we are crafting an innovative and compelling mobility solution for northern Düsseldorf. This initiative will shift commuter traffic to rail, alleviating congestion at both the main train station and the city’s primary road network. Beyond its local impact, DUSconnect will serve as a pioneering model, radiating influence far beyond North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state.”
The mobility hub will be built in three phases of construction by 2035. It will start with the extended 3rd construction phase of the Düsseldorf EUREF-Campus. In addition to around 30,000 m² of office space, 1,500 additional parking spaces and a three-star hotel will be created.
In terms of transport, the DUSconnect Project plan proposes numerous expansion stages around the airport’s long-distance rail station, which will accompany the planned track extensions by Deutsche Bahn for local and regional transport. Including a second pedestrian bridge, park & ride facilities, the connection of a cycle route, an additional motorway junction to the A44, bus stops for local and long-distance buses as well as a multi-storey car park in the immediate vicinity of the planned Airport City III.
Lars Redeligx, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport: “The future of aviation is taking shape in the north of Düsseldorf. We are creating an area at our airport for the sustainable energy supply of a CO2-neutral airport. For example, by building a hydrogen filling station, a new tank farm with a rail connection and by providing sustainable aviation fuels. We are focusing on an innovation partnership with the neighbouring EUREF campus and further expertise from North Rhine-Westphalia. The DUSconnect mobility hub ensures the logistical connections for the eastern airport area and creates an outstanding link between air, rail and road transport. This will create new, attractive transfer options and make DUS Airport a pioneer in trimodality. In the medium term, the remaining domestic German flights can be gradually transferred to new Inter City Express (ICE) connections.”
For EUREF AG, the trimodal mobility hub is a logical extension of the EUREF-Campus in Düsseldorf. Board spokeswoman Karin Teichmann: “With an investment volume of around 200 million euros, we are creating space for this transport transition. With an additional 30,000 m² of office space, which will of course be climate-neutral, companies can work and research right beside and together with the key players in the mobility of the future. Up to 200 hotel rooms will also make it possible to turn Düsseldorf into a central forum and future location for mobility with the event locations like the Station Airport and the EUREF Dome.”
